Wellspring Academy

Discerning a need for high quality pre-school preparatory child care in Henderson, a small group of St. Paul’s parishioners founded Wellspring Academy in 2000. It has been growing ever since. Wellspring Academy provides for children from tiny infants through five-year olds ready for kindergarten. Our children are loved at Wellspring Academy.

Wellspring Academy, now independent from St. Paul's, is incorporated as a not-for profit corporation under the laws of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. A majority of its board of directors are members of St. Paul’s, the Vestry of St. Paul’s appoints one from its membership on the board and the Rector serves as a board member or appoints a parishioner to serve in her place. One parent representative serves on the board.

As well as providing love, top quality care, and a sound learning foundation for our fifty plus pupils, a part of the goal of Wellspring Academy is to lift the overall quality of pre-school preparatory child care in Henderson by setting an example of excellence. We expect all our teachers to advance in their training toward higher and higher professional accreditation for so long as they teach for us - some taking advanced college course, others working toward higher early childhood training certification. We are fully certified under the laws of Kentucky as a not-for-profit school rather than under the less stringent church-school regulations. All teachers and aides are given police background checks and meet state certification requirements.

As well as the basic curriculum designed to prepare our students for kindergarten with a head start at academic success our students receive regular classes in Spanish, physical education and music. Chapel services in St. Paul’s are a part of the regular weekly routine. We also conduct a variety of seasonal special events. A hearty breakfast and lunch is prepared in the parish kitchen each school day and we work hard to teach good table manners and healthy eating habits.

Many individuals and local businesses have given grants for the founding and early development of Wellspring Academy as well as the support of the parish. The Preston Family Foundation, Palmer Ore Company and Sunrise Tool, Inc. have given particularly generous support. Perhaps the most moving support came through the love and kindness of the late Mrs. Jayne Morton Barret who died in her 86th year in 2002. Her former apartment is now a part of our infant care center and is named, "Miss Jayne’s Garden". At her request her cremated ashes were spread on the grounds between the church and her former residence. A portrait of her as a toddler smiles down on the little ones playing and learning where she used to live. We still feel her loving presence at Wellspring Academy.
